A company that resembles a flourishing garden

Our actions have been focused on the idea of sustainability since long before this was coined as a term. After all, natural cycles and the power of vital, unpolluted raw materials form the basis of all Dr.Hauschka products.

Imagine our company as a flourishing garden: we work as carefully and responsibly as possible, base our actions on nature’s rhythms, value manual work and see the merits of both a healthy compost and a rich harvest.

Specific sustainability

At Dr.Hauschka, sustainability is not an expert topic; it is an indispensable part of our company philosophy and therefore an everyday requirement.

  • We almost exclusively obtain our plants, oils and waxes from controlled organic cultivation (biodynamic quality where possible) and under fair trade conditions.
  • We think and work in material cycles – for example, when using rain water or easy-to-recycle packaging materials and when composting vegetal production waste.
  • We conserve resources wherever possible: we have procured 100% certified green electricity for many years, we use heat recovery and the ground temperature for air conditioning purposes, we provide company bicycles, pay our employees’ public transport fares and provide a carpooling platform.

Soil is a complex organism in which several cycles are interlinked to create a stable system. This stability can only be retained if humans integrate themselves into these cycles responsibly.

We need nature, but nature can also need us: when we created our medicinal plant garden in 1955, the site was a boggy meadow with heavy loam soil. Today, valuable medicinal plants grow in this now Demeter-certified garden. This piece of land continually teaches us the secrets of sustainable business practices.

Sustainable partnerships all around the world

We also support sustainability through the ecological, socially-responsible partnerships that we have created: for example, we obtain shea butter from an organically certified collection area in Burkina Faso and the precious oil of the Damask roses from countries such as from Afghanistan, where we are working with the World Hunger Organisation to offer around 700 farmers who now use organic methods an alternative to opium cultivation.

With your assistance, we are helping to preserve and, as per the Demeter concept, heal the earth for future generations.

We care for the environment. In all sincerity.

It is pretty remarkable: here at Dr. Hauschka, we have been producing cosmetics from nothing but pure nature for over 50 years. In doing so, every year we replace 588 tons of mineral-oil-based and microplastic-infused chemicals with completely biodegradable natural substances. We tend to our well-established herb garden and migrate farms all over the world to certified Demeter biodynamic cultivation. We avoid taking flights wherever possible and drive fuel efficient cars. And yet, the rest of the world seems to be overtaking us somehow.

Suddenly, everyone is green. And no-one is turning red about it.
But should we sacrifice precious arable land to grow crops for organic plastics that are not even recyclable? Should we sneak a few chemical/synthetic preservatives into our creams so we can do away with aluminum tubes? And should we make our industrious bees unemployed just so that we can be vegan?

No.
We have made a firm promise to both ourselves and you that when it comes to the things we are passionate about – the environment, nature, responsibility and sustainability – there is one thing we will never forget: sincerity.

We therefore want to take this opportunity to present our views on a few hotly discussed environmental issues. With complete honesty.
