In Our Own Words - thoughts & reflections from Dr.Hauschka employees
Landis McIntire, Dr.Hauschka Sales Representative
For the past ten years it has been inspiring to be associated with a business that is spiritually based and environmentally connected. WALA's involvement with the women's shea butter collective in Burkina Faso in West Africa is a perfect example of Dr.Hauschka's focus on the responsible and sustainable use of the natural resources used in the production of it's products. Coincidentally, I am a returned Peace Corps volunteer from Upper Volta (as Burkina Faso was formerly known). My assignment began in 1982 and ended in 1984. During that period, this sahelian country was suffering from severe drought; the infant mortality rate was 47%, the life expectancy of a female around 50 years and the annual average income approximately $125 a year. Both UNICEF and The United Nations rated Upper Volta as being the second poorest country in the world behind civil war-ridden Chad.
Those two years spent in Upper Volta taught me the value of involving the local populace in appropriate business ventures that support the local economy and insure the sustainable use of natural resources. This appears to be what WALA has created in the village of Diarabakkoko. Too often western donor countries, though well intentioned, will sink monies into projects that temporarily improve the existing problems without considering long term economic growth. This has come to be known as the cadeau (gift) mentality. Working in cooperation with the village women of Burkina Faso on the Shea butter project WALA is contributing to the life and longevity of some of the poorest people in the world.
Conservation, or what has come to be known as stewardship, has been a lifelong cause for me and I never fail to mention to customers that Dr.Hauschka is involved with the projects mentioned above. The spiritual and philosophical aspects of Anthroposophy and our concern for the environment distinguishes us from competitors whose motives appear to be for the most part driven mainly by profit, margin and gain.
By the way . . . my favorite Dr.Hauschka product is Moor Lavender Body Oil. |
